ditching the carton: why powdered oat milk has won me over

Thought powdered milk was just for babies? Jason Hollingsworth discovers the wonders of powdered oat milk, which it not only great for the environment, but tastes amazing too

A couple of months ago, I decided to try something different with a daily staple: oat milk. I was getting through three to four cartons a week, lugging them home from the supermarket and filling up the recycling bin just as quickly. It felt inefficient, wasteful and, frankly, a bit dated. That’s when I came across Overherd.

A small switch that makes a big difference

The concept is simple: oat milk in powder form, delivered in a compact pouch. You mix what you need with water using a reusable bottle. That’s it.

In practice, it’s even easier than it sounds. Add the powder, shake, and you’ve got fresh oat milk in seconds. No more last-minute dashes to the shop or carrying multiple cartons home. For someone who uses oat milk every day, it’s a genuinely convenient upgrade.

But the real shift is in waste. Instead of getting through several cartons each week, I now have a single pouch that lasts significantly longer. And because you only mix what you need, there’s virtually no waste from unused milk going off in the fridge.

How it performs day to day

Convenience is one thing, but performance matters. On that front, it holds up well.

The taste is spot on – creamy without being heavy – and it froths reliably for morning coffee, which is non-negotiable. I’ve also used it in cooking, from sauces to omelettes, and it behaves just like standard oat milk. No compromise, no adjustment needed.

The four Ps in practice

At etheco, we always come back to people, planet, pocket and performance.

Planet: Powdered oat milk dramatically reduces packaging and transport emissions. Shipping lighter, more compact products means fewer delivery impacts, and cutting out cartons reduces material use and waste.

People: The ingredients are simple and plant-based, with a focus on transparency and lower environmental impact compared to dairy. It’s a straightforward, accessible way to make a more sustainable choice.

Pocket: There’s a clear saving over time, especially if you order in slightly larger quantities to offset delivery costs. When you factor in reduced waste and fewer supermarket trips, the value becomes even clearer.

Performance: Crucially, it delivers. Good taste, good texture and versatility across drinks and cooking.

A better everyday default

This isn’t a radical lifestyle change. It’s a small, practical switch. But those are often the ones that stick. For me, powdered oat milk has quietly replaced cartons as the default. Less waste, less hassle and no drop in quality. It’s hard to argue with that.
